...In Borneo a forest headman recently asked me a question. How can a forest being carved up by logging be saved? I told him I understood how he felt. I've learned what it feels like to be adandoned by people, what it means to wander aimlessly, what it feels like to be asked hard questions. In these images of the forest and people, I like to think there are some beginnings of answers. The forest swallows you whole and spits you out during the walking and learning process. It leaves you stumbling; it leaves you amazed. Life persists. Leech scars heal. People across the world in the forest embrace me as they embrace me in Borneo, they show all of us that there are some lessons to be learned.
This ongoing project of mine is partially funded by a US Fulbright Grant. My Borneo work is currently divided into three different bodies: Forest Dreams, Portraits, and Visions; Forest Teachers and Learners; and Playing With the Earth. Finally, I've included an Outtakes gallery as well, which is images of my process and this great adventure of working with forests and communities. Enjoy!
