Images from within the Heart
The sun and waves beat down on the earth and the mangroves rise up to meet it. Mangroves here, on the spit of a peninsula on the island of Borneo, regulate storm surges. They also provide habitat and forging for Probiscus monkeys. At low tide, they can be seen running through the shelter of the low canopy, swinging from branch to branch. While some wade in shallow tidal pools, others munch branches. still others climb to the highest branches to watch of the troop, meet the sky, look upon the rising tide and sun. After I made this image, I closed my own eyes and watched as silhouettes and shadows from the mangroves filtered from sun reflecting off distant mountains. Waves crashed in the distance and water, horizon, mangroves, and mountains merged.
