River Man

This Iban man and I are several days upriver. We are visiting his former tribal lands. He is sharing stories about the forest lands. We visit traditional gravesites, sacred areas, and walk forest trails that are no longer used. When we are resting at a spring in the river, he shows me his ancient warrior tattoos. 'I need to return to these lands,' he tells me. 'These trees, this forest is a place where I can live, hunt, and find food. We all need to start looking to the future.'
