Ponderosa Stand
Ten hours of firewood cutting can get you down. The advantage though, is that you get warm at least three times: once from cutting, another time from splitting and moving the wood, and finally from the warm, dry heat of firewood. In this case, we also got warm from two flat tires that day. This section of forest along the Blackfoot River had been clearcut years ago—my buddy and I were removing some of the large, fallen logs the logger didn’t take. The photograph shows the ponderosa forest that is slowly emerging. We were tired and let the truck coast; the photograph was taken at a slow exposure, moving through the forest and allowing the headlights to paint the motion of the forest and canopy.
