Tobacco is the equivalent to coffee or perhaps, in the US, corn. Throughout Appalachia this crop forms the building blocks of lives, generations, and entire farming communities. When the harvest is in, when migrant farmers are resting, and when the harvest is in the barn, there is a quiet that descends on the land and the last shades of brown and green.
